Floridsdorf Children’s Culture Center: Planning is progressing

New project schedule – opening in fall 2028

The Center for Children’s Culture, with a second location for the ZOOM Children’s Museum and the Children’s Literature House in Vienna’s Floridsdorf district, continues to take shape. Together with ARWAG as the building leaseholder, Kultur Raum Wien GmbH is pushing ahead with the project at full speed.

The renovation, based on the design plans of the renowned architectural firm Kuehn Malvezzi, follows the principle of resource conservation: The existing concrete skeleton will be retained, thus binding the gray energy stored in the existing structure. Targeted interventions, generous glazing, and a new facade made of colored ceramic will create an open, modern building for children and culture. Photovoltaic systems and green roof areas complement the overall sustainable concept.

In addition, an art-in-architecture project is planned for the facade, which will give the building its own unique character. Kunst im öffentlichen Raum Wien (KÖR) will announce an invited artistic competition for this in 2026 in cooperation with ARWAG. In this way, the building will become part of the urban space and contribute to the enhancement of the entire station district.

Changed infrastructural conditions

Planning is in full swing for the climate-friendly renovation of the existing building at Rechten Nordbahngasse 3 (no longer Schloßhofer Straße 16–18 due to the redesign of the building entrance), which will provide space for the new Center for Children’s Culture on five floors.

The project schedule had to be adjusted due to several mutually influencing factors. Priority and extensive infrastructure measures by ÖBB (work on the S-Bahn main line) and Wiener Linien (track replacement work) around Floridsdorf station are significantly restricting construction site logistics.

A new, carefully adjusted schedule is essential to ensure that everything runs smoothly during the compactly planned construction phase. This means that the start of construction will be postponed until spring 2026. The Center for Children’s Culture is scheduled to open its doors to children, young people, and families in fall 2028.
